President’s Report – Month of March

Everyone has been settling into their roles after meeting all of the new students at O’Week and getting ready for the year. The campus representatives have been organising student catch-ups to get feedback from students at UniSA, and USASA has been busy with ClubsFest and gearing up for our pac crawl which has sold out!

In the first week of March I travelled down to our regional campuses. I had the pleasure of attending the Whyalla welcome party, which was a great experience to see the campus, meet some of the students and university staff. It was a really nice event with live music and lovely food, set in the campus gardens.

In Mount Gambier, I met with Julie Baum our USASA Mount Gambier Representative, who gave me a tour of the campus. It’s a really lovely campus and it was interesting to see how each section is catered to a specific cohort of students, whether that be social work, nursing, foundation studies, or otherwise.

The Board has had our initial committee meetings for the year and had some solid goals and objectives for the year fleshed out. On the Women’s Committee we decided we’d like to continue to lobby the university for women’s rooms, so we’re putting together a petition. We are also brainstorming ideas about how to raise more awareness about sexual health and consent on-campus, and are thinking of combining with USASA’s Unitopia to do so. At the Events and Marketing Committee we are working on the events for the year, and expanding the committee so more students can have their say about USASA events. The Governance Committee is continuing its review of the Constitution, and looking at the possibility of USASA establishing an SRC to include more student representative positions.

The USASA Board and the UniSA Education Action Group attended the National Day of Action on the 22nd of March to rally for free education. We held a free BBQ for students and a small rally at City West, then marched from the campus to Parliament House to meet students from the University of Adelaide and Flinders University. I spoke at the protest at Parliament House.

The USASA Board will continue the campaign for free education throughout 2017 – if you’d like to be more involved with the campaign, please email me on Kayla.Dickeson@unisa.edu.au.

Other key activities I’ve been doing throughout the month of March include:

  • Preparing a submission to the university in response to UniSA Online, its new program to be rolled out in 2018 for online education of students – primarily aimed at part-time and mature-age students
  • Preparing a grant for Brekky Bar to receive increased funding from the university in order to make it a free service for students
  • Attending the first working group with university staff on safer and respectful campuses, in reviewing the university’s sexual harassment policies and procedures
  • Working with the USASA Advocacy Team to promote the program to students
  • Preparing submissions in response to the university’s plans to change policies around student exams
  • Working with the university and USASA to map out student representation at UniSA
