Postgraduate – August Activity Report

The month also involved activity surrounding the Student Ombudsman, and ensuring that performance of the Ombudsman is fair for students. The Ombudsman deals with student complaints, and a recent report issued to University Council has misrepresented some of the complaints and concerns raised previously by USASA about the Ombudsman. In addition to raising a complaint at Council, this month involved significant planning around taking action to ensure that Ombudsman performance is fair for all students.

11/08/15 – BLOG DISCUSSION

Discussion with the USASA Marketing Manager about the newly formed blog. I was interested in the decision to host the blog off the USASA website, but once explained by Tom could understand the reasoning. Was happy to see this initiative going forward, which provides reps a better opportunity to connect with students.

Recommendation

Something Tom expressed was the desire to see rep’s take this beyond a ‘status-quo’ applications; meaning that rather than just posting obligatory activity reports on the site, we actively use this to engage with students.

17/08/15 – ACADEMIC APPEALS COMMITTEE

Attended an academic appeals committee for a student who had not been allowed to continue their course. The decision I felt was justified, with the staff in the case providing the student a number of opportunities to amend their work however the student failed to fulfil their duties. The important thing to consider about these cases is to not only measure the case at hand, but also think about maintaining the integrity of the degree as a whole.
