July saw the maintenance of my main election promises; primarily continued promotion of employment opportunities, in addition to taking steps to improve student representation throughout the university. A main contribution was around developing the process for selecting student representatives for school boards. UniSA has been proactive in promoting student representation, and USASA can help choose suitable students to represent the wider student body in these settings. There was development around a proposed structure and format for this activity, which if passed, will help to further promote student representation throughout the university.
14/07/15 – BOARD MEETING
Regular board meeting for the month which included a full review of board papers. In this meeting we discussed the process surrounding the selection of students for school boards, which lead to further development in the coming month.
20/07/15 – BRIGHT FUTURES BOARD POSITIONS
Spoke with Deep about the current board vacancies for Bright Futures. Discussed marketing of the positions, and distributed Bright Futures material via Facebook pages.
22/07/15 – CAREERS INITIATIVES
Emailed Catherine Klimes re upcoming career events. Received a list of event and have systematically been promoting these via email and Facebook.
22/07/15 – POSTGRADUATE INDUCTION
Received details for PG induction, confirmed presentation slot for 28th of September on behalf of USASA.
This may be the last PG induction I attend as our term finishes in December 2015. Attaining presentation slots on PG inductions has been an important step for USASA, and I’d like the board to note the significance of maintaining this process for future PG representatives.
03/08/15 – RESEARCH FOR STUDENT REPRESENATION ON BOARDS
Initial research done for paper proposing the management of student representatives on school boards. Spoke with Daniel, Jason, and Laura-Anne to devise the most appropriate strategy.
I would strongly urge the board to accept the following proposal due to the importance of ensuring effective student representation on school boards. USASA can ensure that student representatives are chosen who are effective in maintaining their board commitments, and hold a strong student-representative orientation. This indirectly increases USASAs student representative reach throughout the university.
03/08/15 – FOLLOW UP MAWSON LAKES
Email follow up with students affected by the Mawson Lakes restructure. There was a series of meetings in the prior month, and I’d sent an email out to all affected students offering support. I hadn’t heard back from anyone, so followed up with the students who had originally contacted me and everyone seemed satisfied. I forwarded this feedback onto Pat, Richard, and Kutlu and thanked them for supporting the students through the process.
The process of restructuring of the Mawson Lakes research centres ended up with relatively little difficulty. UniSA did a good job managing the different priorities, and it appears as if PhD students who were indirectly affected by their supervisors losing their roles have been well looked after in what is a difficult situation.
